Cultural Heritage — A Bridge Toward Peace?

In times of armed conflict, public attention often focuses first on human casualties and urgent humanitarian needs. The destruction of cultural heritage, and the need to protect it, tends to receive far less attention in the media and public debate. Yet cultural heritage is not secondary to conflict. It is tied to memory, identity, social cohesion, and the possibility of rebuilding societies after violence.
On Wednesday, 20 May 2026, students from the University of Geneva working in collaboration with Fight for Humanity will host an event exploring the role of cultural heritage protection in conflict-affected societies and its potential contribution to peacebuilding. This conference will examine how civil society organizations are promoting this process.
The work of Fight for Humanity reflects this approach by using cultural heritage as a tool to strengthen social cohesion and support community resilience. Through projects in Sudan, Syria, and Lebanon, Fight for Humanity has developed initiatives that combine heritage restoration, technical training, and community-based engagement. These projects aim to restore the social function of heritage sites, build local capacity, and create spaces for dialogue around a shared cultural legacy.
In addition to highlighting Fight for Humanity's projects, the event will also feature speakers from the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage (ALIPH), the Kofi Annan Foundation, the Centre for Armed Groups, and the Directorate General of Antiquities, Lebanon.

Le patrimoine culturel, un pont vers la paix ?
En période de conflit armé, l’attention du public se porte souvent d’abord sur les pertes humaines et les besoins humanitaires urgents. La destruction du patrimoine culturel, ainsi que la nécessité de le protéger, reçoivent souvent beaucoup moins d’attention dans les médias et le débat public. Pourtant, le patrimoine culturel n’est pas secondaire dans les situations de conflit. Il est lié à la mémoire, à l’identité, à la cohésion sociale et à la possibilité de reconstruire les sociétés après la violence.
Le mercredi 20 mai 2026, des étudiants de l’Université de Genève, en collaboration avec Fight for Humanity, organiseront un événement consacré au rôle de la protection du patrimoine culturel dans les sociétés touchées par les conflits, ainsi qu’à sa contribution potentielle à la consolidation de la paix. Cette conférence examinera la manière dont les organisations de la société civile relient de plus en plus la préservation du patrimoine culturel aux efforts de consolidation de la paix.
Le travail de Fight for Humanity s’inscrit dans cette approche, en mobilisant le patrimoine culturel comme outil pour renforcer la cohésion sociale et soutenir des dynamiques locales de résilience. À travers ses projets au Soudan, en Syrie et au Liban, Fight for Humanity a développé des initiatives qui combinent restauration du patrimoine, formation technique et engagement communautaire. Ces projets visent à redonner une fonction sociale aux sites patrimoniaux, à renforcer les capacités locales et à créer des espaces de dialogue autour d’un héritage culturel commun.
En plus de mettre en lumière les projets de Fight for Humanity, l’événement réunira des intervenants de l’Alliance internationale pour la protection du patrimoine dans les zones en conflit (ALIPH), de la Fondation Kofi Annan, du Centre for Armed Groups et de la Direction générale des antiquités du Liban.
