Lebanon

Over thirty years after the end of the 1975-1990 civil war, Lebanon continues to grapple with deep-rooted political, social, and sectarian divisions. Many communities still live within the confines of their own neighbourhoods, schools, religiously affiliated institutions, and media environments, while trust between communities remains fragile.

In recent years, the country has faced successive crises, including economic collapse, political instability, and the regional repercussions of the conflict that followed the October 2023 attacks. In 2026, the wider escalation of violence across the Middle East further intensified humanitarian needs and placed additional strain on Lebanon's already fragile recovery. Despite ongoing efforts to promote dialogue and stability, rebuilding trust, strengthening social cohesion, and supporting inclusive governance remain critical to achieving lasting peace.

Fight for Humanity and its partners, the Kofi Annan Foundation, Permanent Peace Movement, the Institut Européen de Coopération et de Développement and the Directorate General of Antiquities of Lebanon worked on “Rooting for the Future”, a project that led to the restoration of key parts of the Tripoli citadel, notably its north tower and east façade, which required urgent conservation measures. The restoration was led by experienced professionals, who also trained 20 vulnerable young people from diverse backgrounds in restoring sections of this historical landmark. These youth gained valuable conservation skills, as well as life and employability skills, contributing to a new generation of cultural heritage workers with hands-on expertise and fostering dialogue between communities.
